Woke up early this morning, new it was my turn to make breakfast for the other babes, so there was no point of dreaming of some sweet snoozing in my warm sleeping bag.
Getting out of that one is actually a bit of an work out, we sleep in 4 diffrent bags. The one closest to our bodies are like a waterproof pllasticbag, to protect our two real sleeping bags from inner body mouisture. Really cosy to sleep in I tell ya! The last one is to protect from outer moiusture. So once your out of those four you are actually quite warm and awake.
I start Im melting snow, and Vera and Kristin are out packing the sleds,, Vera suddenly shouts, polarbear! I run out, andd sure, there she is, the arctic queen. Its a big beautiful mama with her last year kid, they are walking around in the packice just outside our camping island. We follow them as they move tfuther out on the ice toowards open water.
Our goal for the day is to cross Alexander bay, a 14km leg, so we can reach Henry Kater peninsula. Along the way its a lot of packice, which makes it hard to get a good overview of polarbears. We keep our signalflares ready in our pockets and the riffles easyby. The iceformations truly are facinating, but also a bit frustrating to get through with a heavy sled behind you.
Once afternoon we can see the shoreline were we plan to camp, and Kristin also spots a yellowish thing moving around over there, another polarbear! Its a young male, so has also the Arctic King arrived today. Ano, our dog watches carefully every step it takes, and so do we as it walks along the shoreline. Suddenly it change direction, starting to move straight towards us. We have our signalflares and riffles ready, its facinating to watch him, he truly is beautiful. But to be honest also a bit scary, my heart beats faster as I see how he comes closer.
- How close are we gonna let it come before we shoot a warning shot, asks Vera. Suddenly it turns again and start running futher out on the ice, hedding for the floe edge. We stay still following where it moves for a long time.
Once at our campsite at night, brushing our teeth in the cold underneeth the stars we see some lights cominng towards us. Our third visit today, but this time its to inuit guys, one austrian and 11 dogs. They are out looking for polarbears, the austrian guy want to bring one home. - I want i big one, the size of your tent, he says. And I tell you, our tent is big as a palace! Here at Baffin you are allowed to hunt polar bears, each comunity get a quota and a part of that they can sell to sporthunters, mainly coming from Europe and Rusia.
